Recycled Toy Making
Boys during hobbies have started making toys for Singakwenza. This charity has been nominated for the Charity of Choice for the Business Charity Award Competition held in the UK annually. Julie Hay who started this programme was also chosen for the Vodacom Change the World Campaign. Here boys are seen making teaching aids.
Ashdown Books and Overhead Projectors
The Wykeham Collegiate and Cordwalles twinned and collected more library books to help stock the library for Ashdown which was built for their school last year. The shelving was generously donated by Tony Wilson of Jacobz Joinery. Cordwalles also repaired OHPs and gave these to Ashdown to use in their classrooms. This is an ongoing project and any donations of books would be welcome.
Easter Eggs
Over 9000 Easter eggs were collected and delivered to about 28 homes and charitites in and around Pietermaritzburg. A very big thank you especially to Wendy Gray and her son Matthew and his friends who helped distribute many of these eggs.
Cake and Candy
Boys dress up during the terms and bring a donation. This money has been used to support the Mzunduzi Hospice . Kelly Acutt swam the 8 Mile Swim at the 2011 Midmar Mile raising awareness for Hospice.
Blanket Drive
During the second term we had a drive to collect blankets for winter. The generous donations exceeded our expectation, especially when we were all required to wear blankets for Cake and Candy. About 400 blankets were collected and handed out to various organizations. The Grade 4 boys sorted the blankets and packed them into various boxes to be distributed. These were collected by Piere Horn and NGO from Underberg and distributed to individuals in the area. They were also distributed by Youth for Christ for the girl boarders in their hostel
Rochdale Baptist Church, in the Mahagu valley, which is found at the foothills of Lesotho, is the last settlement before you climb up the mountain pass to the border post. Although there is piped drinking water, it is not reliable and often is dry. There is no electricity or sanitation. The valley is 40km from Matatiele. There is no formal employment in the area. Very poor people with very little but they have HUGE hearts. We have been working with the community for about 5 years now and have helped start a community garden (which needs work) to help feed the community. The church is predominately women & children church. The area has felt the affects of Aid & HIV over the years. The Cordwalles boys kindly donated blankets which were distributed to this area with the help of my son Tim Houghting who is in Grade 4. (Ron Houghting)
Angel’ s Who Care
A huge thank you, on behalf of Angels Care, goes to the Cordwalles community. We are so fortunate to be part of such a kind and caring community like Cordwalles! At the beginning of the year, we had a collection of ‘old’ toys, games and books for Angels Care in Howick. We also asked if anyone had an old photostat machine lying around. We were inundated with the most fantastic collection of items! We took some of the large items to Angels Care last term and their genuine delight really warmed our hearts. The Grade 1 and 2 boys will be visiting Angels Care to hand over the rest of the games and smaller toys, and to have some time to interact with their young pupils. Special mention needs to be made of Nashua and the Maharaj family for their very generous donation of a brand new Photostat machine, accompanied by free toner and free services. The teachers at Angels Care were very excited and so grateful to see their prayers for a Photostat machine answered. A huge thank you to all those wonderful Cordwalles families who contributed to this collection of items.
