Sharon Smallie
Head of Hamilton Media Centre
Born in Namibia (that’s where I learnt to “praat die taal”, with a maiden name of Marais and being part of a large family of Afrikaans speakers!). I moved to Pmb when I was 5 yrs old and started school at Pelham. Moved on to Scottsville and went to Russell High (hence the ability to type!).After school, I went to Natal Training College to do a three year Senior Primary Diploma majoring in Phys Ed. (and Drummies! Does anyone still remember those days?) as well as Geography. Much later on, and boy was it difficult to study again after more than 10 years, I did my 4th year through correspondence majoring in Geography and Zulu.My first teaching post was at Newton High School (a real baptism of fire for a first year teacher!) I was married to Christopher at the end of 1978 and then moved on to Scottsville School. After my son Sean was born in 1981 and my daughter Keran in 1983, we moved to Hilton where I spent time teaching at Laddsworth, before moving here to Cordwalles in 1996! I love the beach and am happiest sitting on the veranda of our cottage at Bazley sharing a glass of icy cold wine with good friends! My husband is a “braai meester” and turning meat over some hot coals is another favourite! Music and reading are also amongst the “to do” activities. I have spent a very happy time here at Cordwalles and I have taught from Grade 3 through to Grade 7 and have recently settled into managing the Media Centre. Now, well settled in the new Hamilton Media Centre, I really know I am privileged to be a part of this wonderful Cordwalles Community of good friends. |
