NEWSLETTER No. 22

Dear Parents, Staff and Boys
Holidays are WONDERFUL!
There are no schedules to adhere to (no need to wear watches!), no lunch boxes to make, no homework, no bedtime rules to re-in force and, who cares if the kids don’t shower EVERY night or wash their hair regularly? – and, best of all, there’s no need to wear make up for days! Well, at least it was like that for me for the two weeks that I was fortunate enough to spend in the wilds of Botswana!
Holidays in the bush are ‘golden times’ when we get to just ‘be’ and do lots of talking and reading, sitting around the campfire and reconnecting with family and friends. The African bush is a real panacea for the soul and we are often reminded of how blessed we are to be part of such an amazing country. Flying over the Okavango Delta, gliding along on the Chobe River in awesome silence on a small boat or watching well-fed, lazy lions snoozing in the shade: these are memories I will cherish! It seems as if many boys and their families also spent time in the bush in various parts of Southern Africa. Sharing these memories with one’s family makes them all the more special and brings us all closer together. They are times that cannot be replaced or repeated.
This is a point that Mr Weaver made in his previous newsletter and a point that was brought home to all of us at the beginning of the Term when we decided on our theme for the term: “A TIME TO CELEBRATE!” Hopefully, you and your boys have had quality time during the holidays to re-connect and to celebrate time together! Before too long, the business of the term sets in and the holidays become a distant memory.
BUT… the stories of special moments, hilarious moments, disastrous moments and scary moments, will be told over and over again to any person who is willing to listen (often the teachers!) and so, the memories become a special part of the family. Encourage your boys to tell them. It is a skill to be learned and appreciated. It is so important to listen to your children’s stories. Really listen and interact when they relay an event to you – however busy or rushed you may be feeling. Everyone values it when one feels ‘listened to’. After all, we need to celebrate the fact that we have special people with whom we can share our life experiences!
Food for thought – “To get all there is out of living, we must employ our time wisely, never being in too much of a hurry to stop and sip life, but never losing our sense of the enormous value of a minute!” – Robert Updegraff
TAKE TIME TO CELEBRATE your special holiday memories!
