SHIVER ME TIMBERS!

“Are you ready pirate?” “Aye, Aye, Captain!”
And so freshly adorned pirates departed on their intrepid journey to the treasure rich island of ‘Cordwalles’.
On arrival at the Pennington Pavilion HQ all were duly tagged and briefed by the fairer version of pirate leaders, handed a ‘treasure map” and sent on their merry way around Cordwalles Preparatory School. There was great excitement as Inky pirates with Pirate Dad sailed around the school stopping to anchor at the Headmaster’s house, the swimming pool, ‘Bhanoyi’ and at the place of worship (school chapel) because even a pirate may need divine intervention in stormy seas!

GRADE 4 WATCH INVICTUS
The Grade 4 boys from Cordwalles Preparatory School were fortunate enough to watch the film Invictus at the Liberty Midlands Mall. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves as it fitted in so well with their “Proudly South African” theme for the term! Seeing their country through the eyes of Apartheid and seeing Mandela’s forgiveness in action was life-changing for them. Their highlight was, of course, the exciting rugby scenes of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

SCIENCE AT CORDWALLES
In the Science Department at Cordwalles Preparatory School, the topic for the Grade 7 boys has been energy. The boys researched different forms of energy and discussed wind energy as an alternative to fossil fuel energy. They also discussed wind power as a renewable source of energy which could be used to create electricity to light our houses and run factories. The boys then built their own wind anemometer to measure the speed of wind in class.

In the meanwhile, in the Grade 6 class the boys were involved with the topic on acids and bases. They had to do experiments with soap and had to learn about the use of chemicals in the home and how to use our knowledge to make wise decisions about chemicals. In the lesson “Have you ever wondered how soap takes away dirt” the boys did an experiment to see how chemicals in soap clean clothes. They choose three different kinds of washing soap and a stain removal, and marked a cloth with mud, oil and ink. The boys washed the cloths in the various soaps to see which performed better and compared the stains.

GRADE 2 OUTING TO KARKLOOF CONSERVANCY
The Cordwalles Preparatory School Grade 2 boys visited the Karkloof Conservancy to observe diverse bird life in the Wetlands. It was a fascinating and enjoyable morning for the boys as they enjoyed sitting in a
classroom outdoors and visiting a bird hide.
GRADE 1 OUTING
As part of the Duzi River theme, the Grade 1 boys from Cordwalles Preparatory School visited Popes Canoes Centre. The boys enjoyed seeing the manufacturing of canoes and the repair of those who unfortunately broke while participating in the 'Duzi' race.

"Oh dear! Who broke the canoe?"
