Michael was born in Port Elizabeth. His family later relocated to KZN when he was a toddler. He attended Alston Primary School and Haythorne High school in Pietermaritzburg and obtained his teaching diploma at Bechet Teachers Training College in Durban. He holds the following qualifications: Diploma in Education, Advanced Certificate in Education (Educational Leadership) and a B.E.D. Honours in Educational Management. Michael taught at Woodlands Primary School for 14 years before joining the Cordwalles family in 2007.

He has previously taught Grade 6 and 7 Life Orientation, Social Science, History and Geography, however Afrikaans is his specialist subject. He is married to Rochelle who works in the Insurance Industry and they have 2 sons: Landon and Jared who both attended Cordwalles. Landon is a 3rd year student at the University of Pretoria and Jared is a Grade 12 student at Maritzburg College.

Michael has many interests, passions and achievements include representing Natal in Table Tennis, he is a keen cyclist, runner and has competed in most of the major cycle/running races countrywide. His current passion is giving back to his old community by delivering cricket coaching to less fortunate boys.
